Things You Need To Know About Sedation Dentistry

The fear of dentist is a strong factor which can make a patient to totally avoid a dental treatment. This is the reason that modern dentistry openly offers sedation at different levels to ensure fear-free dental experience.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is often thought to be the process to put a patient at sleep. While there may be a scenario which requires a patient to be put at sleep, it is not always the case. Some patients just need to calm down a bit. The calming sedation is for the patients who have dental fear. However, a patient needs to be put at sleep when dental procedure is of intense kind such as root canal treatment or dental implant.

One thing worth mentioning here is that numbing is not the part of sedation dentistry. Numbing shots will be given to you any way. Sedation dentistry, most of the times, it associated with the calming procedure in order to free a patient from the fear of dentist. Numbing shots can be a painful experience. Hence, it’s good idea to receive sedation before numbing shots. Sedation can go at a level where you won’t be able to remember anything done during the procedure.

Different ways to administer sedation

The first to mention and the most common way of administering sedation is to give patient nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. This gas is a wonderful relaxant but it wears off pretty quickly because it’s just a gas. The moment you stop your breath, you will be able to regain your consciousness. Usually a nose apparatus is given to the patient in order to administer laughing gas. The effects of this gas are mild but they should be enough to calm down a patient completely.

Another way of administering sedation is to give patient the relaxant pills. Use of these pills is not going to put you asleep. You will be awake during the procedure but you will not be afraid of the procedure. Thus, this procedure is quite effective for the ones who are too anxious about the dental treatments. Although you may stay awake during the dental process, you may not be able to remember much about the procedure. Some people forget about the procedure completely.

And the final one which is thought to be the strongest one is IV sedation. However, there are levels at which this sedation can be administered. If you opt to stay awake during the process, IV sedation gives you the option for it. However, you may not be able to remember anything about the procedure once it’s over.

Another form of IV sedation involves administering of general anesthesia. This sedation puts you asleep. This sedation is suitable for the patients who need to undergo intense oral surgeries.
